What is the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium?

The Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) is a global, not-for-profit organisation that develops data standards across all the healthcare sector. Founded in 1997, over the last 20+ years CDISC has provided guidance on the transformation of clinical data from incompatible into interoperable formats so that it is usable, regardless of where or when the data originated.

The CDISC mission is to ensure that valuable clinical data collected within the private and public sectors can achieve its full impact; it must be accessible, interoperable and reusable so that the entirety of the clinical research field can harness the potential of this data. By adhering to CDISC standards, data scientists avoid spending countless hours cleaning, mapping and translating incompatible datasets that were collected from disparate sources. CDISC standards ensure that datasets are analysis-ready from the beginning. The standards outlined by CDISC cover data collection, organisation and analysis, these include Foundational Standards, Data Exchange Standards, Disease-specific standards, and Controlled Terminology.

CDISC has been recognised by the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) and several of their research standards are now required by healthcare regulations in the US (FDA), Japan (PMDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for clinical trial applications. In summary, implementing CDISC standards can greatly promote efficiency, improve data quality and sharing, reduce costs, and enhance innovation and collaboration within clinical research.

What does CDISC membership certification mean for Lifebit’s clients?

Lifebit has deep expertise in integrating CDISC-transformed clinical data into federated analysis workflows. Our goal is to empower our clients with the capabilities required to accelerate their research. Further, we are committed to contributing to the greater research community by promoting the use of analysis-ready data that can be utilised in the long-term to power therapeutic discovery. Lifebit’s Platform enables secure data access and usability, and we are proud to promote community best-practices in our work with valued clients including Genomics England, the Danish National Genome Centre, Boehringer Ingelheim, NIHR Cambridge BRC, and others. With CDISC membership, Lifebit is formally recognised for integrating clinical data aligned to CDISC standards, enabling our clients to combine data sources to achieve maximal insights.

“We are very proud to join the CDISC community. With the vast network of diverse data types and sources available today, it is critical that these data are interoperable so they can be reused and combined to achieve maximal research and clinical insights. Lifebit deeply aligns with CDISC’s mission - we want to do our part and contribute interoperable, usable data into the research ecosystem, while simultaneously promoting rapid research progress and cost-saving approaches for our clients.” - Dr. Maria Chatzou Dunford, CEO of Lifebit
