A Trusted Research Environment follows the Five Safes: Safe Data, Safe People, Safe Settings, Safe Projects, and Safe Outputs. Safe Data is the cornerstone, and it rests on three controls.

Every output is reviewed before it leaves. Without an Airlock, users can download sensitive data.

Blocks every export attempt that tries to go around the Airlock, so data cannot be exfiltrated.

What is a Trusted Research Environment (TRE)?
A secure digital workspace where approved researchers analyze sensitive data, such as health or genomic records, without moving or downloading it. Access is authenticated, every workflow is auditable, and outputs are reviewed before they leave. Read the key features of a TRE.
What is included in the free Start plan?
Start is free forever for small teams, pilots, and nonprofits: one secure workspace, unlimited users and data, federation to your own data and compute, workspace management, and Nextflow, Spark notebooks, Jupyter, and RStudio. It does not include the Airlock or data harmonization.
What is the difference between Launch and Scale?
Launch adds helpdesk support, 10 workspaces, the Airlock, compute cost limits, database connections, source and omics data ETLs, and the cohort browser. Scale adds concierge support, 25 workspaces, firewall setup and management, OMOP data ETLs, an enterprise data catalog, federated data connections, and Lifebit’s gold-standard genomics workflows.
Which plans support OMOP data harmonization?
OMOP data ETLs start in Scale. Enterprise adds AI-automated OMOP mapping, source data cleaning, and federated network management. Start and Launch do not include OMOP.
Can Lifebit run on-premise or in a hybrid cloud?
Yes. Enterprise supports on-premise, hybrid cloud, and multi-cloud deployment, including virtual desktops, firewall services, and billing controls built for pharma and national programs.
What is a workspace?
A secure, permission-controlled environment where users access, analyze, and manage sensitive data without moving it. Each workspace can serve an internal team or an external organization, with its own users and data access rules, which makes partner onboarding and multi-institution research simple to govern.
Do you charge for implementation?
No. Onboarding, deployment, training, and ongoing support are included in your annual license. No hidden costs.
Which people do we need to run the platform?
Lifebit is fully managed. We recommend four part-time roles: a cloud access administrator (first week only), a project or product lead, a platform administrator (can be the same person as the lead), and a data access manager when new data arrives. Lifebit’s Solutions and Customer Success team supports each one.
Can I use RStudio Pro?
Yes. Bring your own RStudio Pro license and run it inside your secure workspace. We don’t resell licenses, but we can connect you with Posit.
What makes Lifebit federated?
Lifebit runs analysis where the data lives, across any cloud, on-premise system, or country, without moving the data. Many platforms offer controlled access but still copy data into their own environment first.
