Federated Analysis

Definition: Federated analysis is a research method in which the computation is sent to where data lives — across multiple hospitals, biobanks, or countries — and only aggregate results return, so the underlying records never move or get pooled centrally.

How federated analysis works

Instead of collecting datasets into one central warehouse, a federated system connects distributed datasets behind each custodian’s firewall. A researcher writes one analysis; the platform runs it inside each participating environment; results — counts, model updates, statistics — are combined. The patient-level data never leaves the source.

Why it replaced data pooling

Centralizing sensitive health data multiplies legal exposure, breaks consent terms written for a single institution, and in many jurisdictions is simply unlawful. Federation removes the blocker: institutions participate without surrendering custody, which means studies reach cohorts — across borders and institutions — that a centralized design could never assemble.
