What is a federated Trusted Research Environment?

A Trusted Research Environment (TRE) is a secure, governed platform where approved researchers analyze sensitive health data without it leaving its source. Also known as a Secure Data Environment or Data Safe Haven, it follows the Five Safes framework.

A federated TRE goes one step further. It connects data held in different places, clouds, and countries, and runs the same analysis at each one. The data never moves; only approved results come back.

Frequently asked questions

Does any data leave our environment?

No. Patient-level data stays in your cloud. Only results an admin approves in Airlock can leave.

Where does it run?

In your own cloud account or tenancy, on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, or on premises.

What security controls does it use?

It is built on FedRAMP Moderate and NIST 800-53 controls, aligned with GDPR and HIPAA, and follows the Five Safes framework.

What is the difference between a TRE and a federated TRE?

A TRE keeps data secure in one environment. A federated TRE connects many environments and runs the same analysis at each, without pooling the data.

How long does it take to go live?

It depends on your data sources and approvals. In the first call we agree on one project and one data source, and give you a plan with dates.

Can researchers use AI inside the TRE?

Yes. With AI Scientist Studio, AI Scientists run inside your environment with the user’s permissions, and their outputs go through the same Airlock review.

How is it priced?

There are four plans, from a free plan for small teams to Enterprise for pharma and national programs. See pricing.
